How can we shed light into the black box we call the future?

Colleagues regularly ask me one question: “How can we best plan for the future?” And my response is always: “By asking the right questions at the right time.”

This applies to the way that you plan your life, just as it does to the decisions that companies make about their strategies. People who raise questions are ready to do their part and assume responsibility.

At Deutsche Post DHL, this is the way we perceive ourselves and it is a key component of our corporate strategy. Our core business is logistics, an industry that, unlike any other, forms the backbone of global trade and our modern way of life – as a result, it is a generator of growth.

But what will the “modern way of life” be like in the future? Will we be able to afford further growth in the wake of climate change and the growing scarcity of resources? What are the alternatives to established ways of acting and thinking, alternatives with which we can experiment today in order to make the right decisions tomorrow?

With our new blog “Delivering Tomorrow,” we invite you to join us in an exploration of these and other questions.

Our scenario study, “Logistics 2050,” provides an interesting starting point. If offers projections of the future that range from the conceivable to the absurd.

But that is exactly the point: to push the boundaries of conventional thinking by asking the right questions today.

I look forward to engaging in this journey of the imagination with you!

Best regards,

Frank Appel
CEO of Deutsche Post DHL
